Victoria, Seychelles

A "lost world" of unique flora and fauna has evolved in this isolated archipelago a thousand miles off the coast of Africa. This is Seychelles magic. Not only does it have different origins from any other island group on earth, but whereas so many countries have destroyed their natural heritage, the Seychelles environment has largely been preserved. Almost half of the land has been set aside as parks and reserves. The secluded beaches and coves of Mahe, the largest island, are haunted by the ghosts of La Buse and other pirates. From Victoria, the capital, you can search for buried treasure at Ste. Anne Marine National Park. Or, head for the superb beach of Beau Vallon where you can spend the day snorkelling, exploring from a glass-bottom boat, or napping under the shade of a palm.
